Shanghai East International Medical Center: hours, emergency line and payment rules

Published

Shanghai East International Medical Center (SEIMC) is a joint-venture general hospital in Shanghai's Lujiazui Financial District, and this page sets out what its English website publishes about hours, contact lines and payment. It is a plain profile. It does not rate SEIMC, compare it with other providers or recommend it.

What SEIMC says about itself

SEIMC's Company Profile page says the hospital was established in September 2003 as a joint-venture general hospital. It says SEIMC has been providing 24-hour care to the international and local communities in Shanghai and its neighboring provinces.

These are SEIMC's own descriptions. This page has not checked them against any hospital register.

Where it is and how to get there

The Location & Hours page says SEIMC is on the corner of South Pudong Road and Pudong Avenue, in front of the Shanghai Stock Exchange building, in the new building of Shanghai East Hospital. For car or taxi arrivals, the page says visitors may enter the hospital premises via the gate at 551 South Pudong Road.

Hours as listed

SEIMC's Location & Hours page says it offers 24-hour care, 365 days a year. It lists urgent care and inpatient services as 24 hours.

  • Emergencies. The page says to come to the 24th floor during clinic hours and to the 23rd floor after clinic hours.
  • Outpatient services. The page lists Monday-Friday, Saturday and Sunday, each 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.
  • Rehabilitation and chiropractic. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.
  • Chinese medicine (TCM). Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm, and every Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.
  • Direct billing. The page lists billing specialists as available Monday-Friday and Saturday-Sunday, each 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. It says direct billing outside clinic hours can be provided depending on the insurer's cooperation with SEIMC.
  • Visiting. The page says people may visit hospitalized friends and family at any time unless the doctor has said otherwise, and should come to the 23rd floor and tell the receptionist or nurse which patient they are visiting.

Contact numbers and booking

The 24 Hour Emergency page asks people to call the 24-hour hotline on either number, and says the hotline is answered in English and Chinese.

The same page says SEIMC accepts walk-ins at any time when patients cannot make appointments. It says people can make inquiries or book an appointment by calling either number or emailing care@seimc.com.cn.

The FAQ page says that out of clinic hours people should call and ask a nurse to meet them at the emergency entrance. It also says SEIMC does not make house calls and does not control ambulances, and it recommends that people make their own way to the hospital by taxi or driver if possible.

On ambulances, the FAQ page says ambulances in Shanghai are run by the Shanghai Medical First Aid Center and that people can dial 120 to call one. It says people using the ambulance service pay the driver in RMB cash on arrival at the hospital.

Languages and who it sees

The FAQ page says SEIMC welcomes patients of all nationalities. It says many of its doctors and all of its nurses speak Chinese, and that patients who want a Chinese-speaking doctor should tell the receptionist when they make an appointment.

SEIMC's registration page says registration is free of charge for the international community and that people prepare a photocopy of their passport.

Payment, insurance and deposits

SEIMC's Payment & Insurance page sets out these points:

  • Methods. The page says SEIMC accepts cash, Union Pay, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Alipay and WeChat Pay.
  • Insurance. The page says SEIMC participates in many health insurance plans and can do direct billing, but that balances due to SEIMC remain the responsibility of the patient, not the insurance company.
  • Insurance payment period. It says the insurer must make full payment within 3 months (90 days), otherwise SEIMC requires the patient to settle the balance directly.
  • Guarantee of payment. The page says that if SEIMC does not receive a guarantee of payment (GOP) from the insurer before discharge or before the end of the visit, the patient is financially responsible for the final charges at that time.
  • Self-pay. The page says self-pay patients are expected to pay in full at the time of services.
  • Outpatient deposit. The page says a deposit is required if the total outpatient amount is more than RMB 5000.
  • Inpatient deposit. It says self-pay patients pay a deposit before admission and operation. It says insured patients pay one if SEIMC has not received the insurer's GOP letter before admission, operation or procedure.
